Kaulana ia, he hale Ali’i ē
Holo ka moku, puni ka honua
E ō mai he Ali’i o Hawai’i nei
Palapala ‘ia ke hoa sivila

I ka poni mō’ī ‘o Kalākaua
Pili maila ke aloha o nā kupa ē
Hā’ina ‘ia mai ana ka pūana
He ali’i kaulana ‘o Kalākaua
He mele kaulana nō Kalākaua
Ka’ōnohiokalā high above
In the house of Ha’eha’e
A heavenly bird soars above
Famous indeed, a chiefly house
A ship that travels around the world
Rejoice a grand chief of Hawai’i
Friendship treaties with
Europe, Japan and others
Crown chief is Kalākaua
Love of his people and love of a chief
A story is told
A famous chief, Kalākaua
A famous song for Kalākaua
A precious chief to the people of Hawai’i, King David Kalākaua lived a life of a Merrie Monarch. He built ‘Iolani Palace to its highest grandeur of Hawai’i, honoring a heavenly bird. He became the only chief to travel the world, taking with him friendship treaties to share the gifts of his people with the world. We honor King David Kalākaua for his love of his people and his people for their king. King David Kalākaua—a blessed chief, a royal monarch indeed.
